Preview: Gumdrop Drop Tech Hideaway case for tablets
By The News & Observer
"Gumdrop makes a range of cases for tablets and smartphones marked by a distinctive tread pattern. The company’s Drop Tech Hideaway is a ruggedized case with a built-in kickstand that folds flush into the case when not in use.
The case sent for review was for Samsung’s Galaxy Note Pro and Tab Pro 12.2 tablets, but it is also available for several other tablets from Samsung along with the Apple iPad, iPad Air, and iPad Mini. We’re still waiting to get that tablet back in our hands, but in the meantime we’ll do a preview of the Hideaway.
Gumdrop emphasizes the Hideaway’s integrated kickstand that all but disappears when not deployed. Some similarly rugged cases require extra bulk or even multiple pieces for kickstand functionality. The Hideaway kickstand offers two viewing angles of which the flatter position is more optimized for typing. The case seems very stable propped in a horizontal position. With the large 12.2-inch Samsung tablet, there is no vertical configuration like that of the iPad version, but it’s not really needed on a device that size.
I don’t have any sensational specs or claims to demonstrate just how tough the Hideaway is, but it features hard polycarbonate and silicone layers along with reinforced rubber bumpers on the corners for shock protection.
A screen protector is included. For those like me who prefer not to use a screen cover, it appears you could use the case without it.
All the ports and buttons are covered. There are camera, microphone and speaker openings. Flaps flip aside for access to the SD card slot and stylus of the Note Pro.
Gumdrop lists the Hideaway at $69.95. At first look, it seems to be a pretty good option for those wanting a kickstand. Given the size and weight of a 12.2-inch tablet, you’ll likely appreciate it."
